An Open Letter to My Son

Dr. Nadine O'Garro and Her Son

I went into education because of you.

When I couldn’t find a “just right” school for you and had to settle, I remember thinking:

“What about all the other children and families who are having to settle? Where are the schools for little Black boys and girls who just want to learn and be cared for?”

I decided then that I would become a part of the solution instead of just complaining about the problem.

Matt, over the years we have changed schools multiple times in search of a school that would see YOU, your big heart and curious mind, and help to cultivate it. We have had some good experiences, but not as many as you deserved.

I am in education because I hoped to be the teacher that every child deserves, even if for only one school year.

This PhD is for you, son, for you and every child I have ever taught.

To all of my babies, we will figure this out, we will do better.

Please hold us accountable.

The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.
