A New Perspective on "Culture"
CRT - Culturally Responsive Teaching. Culturally Relevant Teaching. Culturally Affirming Teaching (ohh, that’s CAT). Okay, let's just focus on the "C," - "Culturally."
What images spring to mind when you think of the word "culture"?
In many educational environments, thoughts often turn to Black and Brown students. But, I've been reflecting on what "culture" really means and signifies within our classrooms.
Typically, when we discuss culture in education, we're talking about our students' cultures. Why? Because understanding their cultural backgrounds enables us to craft dynamic, engaging lessons that truly resonate with them and feel worth their time.
However, student culture encompasses more than just race or ethnicity.
So, what exactly should we consider when we think about student culture?
It's all about our students’ lived experiences.
Whether they're just starting in preschool or preparing for high school graduation, what’s happening in their world? Consider their community, family dynamics, peer groups, trending music, fashion, and social media. And let's not overlook the day-to-day school drama and out-of-school happenings.
But there’s more: our students also bring their unique strengths into the classroom—whether they're natural leaders, athletes, trendsetters, top scholars, or entertainers (a nicer term than "class clown"). By the way, fun fact: I held the title of class clown from third to sixth grade! But let’s not digress.
As we kick off a new school year, I urge you to adopt this broader, richer understanding of "Culture." This perspective challenges us to look past race and ethnicity and focus on who our students are as individuals. Use this enriched understanding to deepen the connections in your lessons, making them more relevant and impactful based on your students' actual experiences.
Next week, we’ll delve a little deeper into getting to know your students and their culture: Going beyond the basics like birthdates, summer activities, and emergency contact numbers.
But tomorrow let's talk about the other CRT! (this one's going to be juicy)
Here’s to a new school year filled with meaningful engagement and inspired learning!
