Welcome back, SuperTeachers!
In Part 1, we talked about using student data and completing assignments as part of a sustainable lesson planning process.

Today, let’s dive into the 5-part lesson structure that anchors my classroom:
Do Now (5-7 mins): Class begins with independent work students can complete on their own. It’s silent time for students to transition into learning and gives me a moment to check attendance and connect with those who need it.
Mini-Lesson (7-10 mins): I launch class with the day’s learning objective: “By the end of this lesson, you will be able to ___ by ___.” Short, focused instruction ensures students receive the key information they need. On novel topics, I may include a video, demonstration, or activity to grab attention.
Classwork (20-25 mins): Students work independently, in pairs, or small groups. I observe silently at first, using proximity to guide those off-task. Then, I engage with small groups needing reteach or extension activities that I have pre-identified during planning.
Consolidation (7-10 mins): This is the heart of the lesson. Instead of reviewing answers, I facilitate discussions to deepen understanding. Students explain their reasoning, cite evidence, and share insights.
Exit Ticket (3-5 mins): A quick, objective-aligned assessment confirms who met the learning objective for the day. Sorting tickets takes no more than 5 minutes—two correct answers mean “met,” and one or more incorrect answers guide reteaching for next time.
Bonus: Homework should be meaningful, doable, and worth your students' time. It’s less about drills and more about connecting learning to the real world, like explaining a concept to a family member or finding real-world examples.
ProTip: Be sure to revisit homework the next day—it signals to your students that their time and effort matters.
