Happy Sunday SuperTeachers,
Let’s get into it—not all feedback helps students grow. Some feedback is useful and actionable, while some is just an observation that leads nowhere.
Think about your own experiences:
Quick Question: When you receive helpful feedback— its specific, actionable, and tied to clear next steps—you have something concrete to work with. You can make adjustments and improve.
But when feedback is vague, purely evaluative, or just a list of mistakes, it’s frustrating and leaves you with no clear path forward.
The same goes for your students. If the only feedback they get is a paper covered in red marks with no explanation—or worse, just a grade—how can we expect them to improve?

How to Give Actionable Feedback That Leads to Growth
Focus on what can be fixed.
Instead of marking every single error, highlight one or two key areas that your students can revise and improve.
Tie feedback to something they’ve learned.
If students are expected to correct mistakes, they need tools! Feedback should connect to class lessons, notes, or resources students can use to self-correct.
Give students time to revise & apply the feedback.
Feedback isn’t useful if it’s ignored. Build in class time for students to review and respond to your feedback.
Make it a routine!
Pro Tip: Set expectations in advance:"I’m handing back your assignments now. Take a few minutes to review my feedback and make corrections. You may use your notes and you may collaborate with a peer sitting next to you (not across the classroom!). I will circulate around the room in a few moments to check in with you as needed, (no need to call me over 😊). "
Do this a few times, and it becomes a classroom norm that students expect, one that actually drives improvement and measurable growth.
Let’s chat in the comments: How do you currently structure time for feedback in your classroom? What’s working? What’s not?
